Motorcycle or bicycle accidents and brain injuries

On behalf of Law Offices of Steven H. Dorne posted in Personal Injury on November 16, 2016.

A traumatic brain injury is often the result of a Maryland motorcycle or bicycle accident. Getting an early diagnosis of a traumatic brain injury is very important so that people are better able to recover.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1.5 million people suffer from traumatic brain injuries each year, and many of the injuries happen in vehicle collisions. Victims may be left with permanently disabling conditions. An early diagnosis may help improve the quality of a patient’s life while also stopping secondary injuries that could otherwise occur.

Free radicals can form in the brain following a traumatic brain injury. The free radicals may cause additional brain damage if early treatment is not started. The recommended treatment for TBIs depends on how severe they are. The Mayo Clinic says that rest, pain relievers and monitoring are important for mild cases. Severe cases will need hospitalization, monitoring and prescription medications, including anti-seizure drugs, diuretics and others. People with severe injuries will also need to undergo multiple tests. Some may need surgery and ongoing rehabilitation.

Motorcycle accidents can result in catastrophic injuries to the riders that can permanently reduce the quality of their lives. They may be unable to work and require expensive round-the-clock medical care and treatment. Many of these accidents are caused by drivers of other vehicles who were not paying attention to the road in front of them or miscalculated the distance between them and the motorcycle. In such a case, the injured cyclist might want to have the help of a lawyer in seeking appropriate compensation from the at-fault motorist.
