Improper truck maintenance can have catastrophic consequences

The commercial trucking industry is an important part of our economy, especially during this time of year. Although this industry has made our lives more convenient, it also comes with dangers. Many of these dangers are averted when commercial carriers follow the regulations that are designed to help reduce the risk of trucking accidents. A failure to do so can have tragic consequences.

Maintenance gone wrong

One such failure involves a lack of proper maintenance.

Improper maintenance can impact a vehicle in many ways. For example, a recent article in Overdrive, a publication about the trucking industry, discussed what occurs when suspension bolts fall out of a moving truck.

The piece stemmed from an incident involving work completed on the suspension of a tractor trailer truck. The suspension was upgraded, which involved replacing some parts. Unfortunately, it appears that two bolts were either removed and never replaced or were improperly replaced and fell out. Upon inspection, it appears the later is more likely as the bolts on the other side of the trailer were loose.

Tragedy averted: A keen driver notices the problem

Thankfully, this story has a happy ending. The driver of the commercial vehicle noticed that the vehicle was not responding as it should. He noticed the handling was off and got out to inspect the vehicle. Upon inspection, he noted the bolts were missing and called for a mechanic.

The mechanic was able to make the necessary corrections and get the vehicle back in proper working order.

Although this driver was able to avert potential disaster, not all drivers may notice similar problems. If this type of situation results in an accident, a number of parties could be liable for any resulting injuries. Depending on the details, the driver may have not met his or her obligations and could be liable. The shop that completed the repairs may be liable. The manufacturer that made the piece could have made a faulty component and could be liable.

Due to the complex nature of these cases, it is often wise for victims to seek the counsel of a truck crash injury lawyer to better ensure the rights, and any potential remedies, are protected.
