Trial begins in Brandywine fatal crash involving former FBI agent

When drivers make the choice to abuse their privileges by driving negligently, they risk the safety and lives of others. A vehicle accident can have lasting effects on the life of its victims, potentially causing ongoing harm and suffering. A reckless driver can face consequences for his or her role in any ensuing car accident and may be held responsible for any damages inflicted.

In Prince George County, one careless driver is now facing this reality in court. A trial has begun in the case of a former FBI agent now accused of drunk driving and speeding, acts that are alleged to have caused a fatal crash in Brandywine. The trial started on Oct. 22, a year and a half after the Feb. 7, 2011 accident that claimed the life of an 18-year-old male and critically injured his 19-year-old male friend.

The former agent is accused of driving his personal SUV into a car carrying the two men, who had just exited a driveway onto North Key Road. Reports indicate that the accused had also nearly struck a police cruiser just before this incident. Although he was off duty at the time, the agent's blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.25, three times the legal limit. The trial is expected to last for three days.

Those hurt in car accidents may have their lives seriously affected by their injuries. From missing time at work and losing wages to being faced with the high costs of medical care, victims can suffer more than physical pain. If someone is killed in a crash, those left behind may struggle to cover the expense of funeral arrangements. Victims or surviving relatives may be entitled to compensation for their losses, and it is important for them to be aware of their legal rights in these matters.
